The Laser 4000 is a two handed dinghy made for planning, a skiff. She is not, however, truly extreme and caters to a wide audience. The sail area and the weight remain moderate and the hull forms are tolerant. She owes her success to a number of interesting innovations that we now found on many dinghies: spinnaker snuffer coupled with retractable bowsprit, gnav system, replacing the vang, or a crew weight compensation system.
Lighter the crew is, more weight correctors are placed in the center, and they can extend the racks. These racks can enlarge the boat up to 2.30m – 7.6ft, for the lightest crew. The system allows crews between 59kg – 130lbs and 94kg – 207lbs to race equal in term of weight and hiking torque.
Today Laser 4000 is commonly called 4000. The dense fleet of the 2000s diminishes a bit but the original hot spots (France, UK and Italy) stay relatively active.
