Melges is an American shipyard founded in 1945 by Harry C. Melges, Sr. The original production was limited to small wooden flat-bottomed boats, but soon the shipyard starts producing Scows, boats made for regattas in American lakes.
The competition aspect was reinforced with the second generation; indeed the son of the founder Harry "Buddy" Melges, Jr. is a talented racer. He won over 60 major events on many sailboats: Soling, Star, Flying Dutchman or even Maxi and obviously Scow. He also participated in the America's Cup and won it in 1992 on the innovative America3.
After this success Buddy entrusts the design of Melges models to Reichel – Pugh Yacht Design. The following winter the Melges 24 is unveiled taking advantage of advanced technologies developed for this competition.
